WHAT IS PEACE BY PEACE?
Peace by PEACE Montreal is a student-run volunteer organization based out of McGill University. Our volunteers work in elementary school classrooms around Montreal and facilitate workshops on issues such as conflict resolution, inter- racial harmony, and inner power. Through games, role-play, art projects, and discussions, students are introduced to cooperative problem-solving skills in a fun and interactive environment. Our program consists of nine one-hour long workshops, each focusing on a different theme. At the end of the in-class component, all of our students celebrate their accomplishments together at our annual Peace Festival.
MISSION
Young people can effectively handle difficult conflict situations if they have the skills, the self- confidence, and the desire to do so. Our aim is to realize this philosophy by educating, motivating, challenging, and encouraging students to address complex issues of conflict on a personal and community level. By linking university students with classrooms, Peace by PEACE provides children with the opportunity to build supportive relationships with positive (and cool!) role models. Peace by PEACE also wishes to leave students with a sense of empowerment, a realization of personal options in dealing with complex issues, and the confidence in their ability to become catalysts for creative solutions in their own communities.
HISTORY
The philosophy of Peace by PEACE was developed by Dr. Francelia Butler, Professor Emeritus of Children’s Literature at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Dr. Butler proposed a new method of teaching negotiation and conflict-resolution skills to young people. The novelty was in the medium she chose–games in which players work towards a common goal and everyone wins. From this, the first Peace Games Festival was born at University of Connecticut in 1990.
In the fall of 1998, inspired by a renewed determination to spread Francelia’s vision after her death, delegates from the Columbia, Yale and Toronto programs established Peace by PEACE International. From there, the program expanded to the University of Toronto, Yale University in New Haven, Columbia University in New York City, Johns Hopkins University, Goucher College in Baltimore and Emory University in Atlanta. Today, there are even branches of Peace by PEACE in Bogotá, Colombia and Dubai.
Peace by PEACE Montreal, the newest Canadian chapter, was established in 2000. We are proud to be the first bilingual program of its kind in Canada.
